Recess is a popular animated series that takes
place at Third Street School and tells of the exciting lives of six
friends: T.J. Detweiler, the fearless leader; Vince LaSalle, the
sports jock; Mikey Blumburg, the poet; Gretchen P. Grundler, Third
Street's resident genius; Ashley Spinelli, the toughest girl in
school; and Gus P. Griswold, the new kid.
Almost all the characters of Recess attend Third
Street Elementary School. Most of the series is centered around the
time they spend playing outdoors during recess, which in the
school's case lasts for forty minutes. The outdoor environment of
Third Street Elementary School is littered with typical playground
equipment, and obscure structures (most notably the Ashley
Clubhouse). During this time, the children are governed by a
pseudo-monarchy, and required to conduct themselves according to a
clichéd set of unwritten laws.
